Originally, I thought that our “twin” adventure was going to start when our baby girls arrived, but boy, was I wrong! The Lord is taking us on a journey that we never could have expected!
Over a month ago, I wrote about some of the complications that were coming up with my twin pregnancy. (To read that post click here.) A lot has happened in that month. For now, I will try to summarize what has happened. At some point when I have time, I hope to write about how God’s hand orchestrated the details of the situation.
The shortened version is that on September 7th I went in for an emergency cerclage procedure. Despite being a very controversial procedure in twin pregnancies (especially as far along as 25 weeks and three days), the results were better than our doctor could have hoped. My cervix, which had shortened to 6mm, measured over 3cm after the procedure! I endured a nine day hospital stay in order to be monitored closely. Everything went wonderfully, and I was able to return home on orders to “rest and relax”.
Due to our rural location, four hours from the hospital where I’m doctoring at, my mom came out from Pennsylvania to stay with us so that I had someone with me 24/7 if I went into premature labor. As you can imagine, cell phone reception is not a reliable thing out here, so counting on being able to reach Dean while he’s working (somewhere on the ranch), was simply not an option.
A week and a half after coming home from the hospital, we returned to get an ultrasound taken of the cerclage (cervical stitch) as well as Baby A’s growth. At that point we had JUST hit 28 weeks and the third trimester. As an answer to prayer, the cerclage still looked fabulous! We got a good report on that front, but the news was more concerning regarding Baby A’s situation. Her placenta appeared to be working harder than her sister’s, but she literally grew less than half the amount. Baby B gained 15 ounces while Baby A only gained seven in the same length of time.
To convey the gravity of the situation, if the placenta continues to digress, we are facing the possibility of Baby A being stillborn within two weeks. Those two weeks are up tomorrow. Tomorrow is 30 weeks, and tomorrow is our next appointment.
These have been the fastest two weeks in some ways, but also the slowest in others. We’re very ready for tomorrow to arrive. Although we do not know the outcome of the situation, we do know the character of the God who controls the outcome. We have been standing in the gap through prayer for the life of our little baby girl. We have not given the enemy, Satan, an inch in this battle. Philippians 4:6-7 instructs us to “not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” The Lord instructs us to “present our requests” to Him, and I take that very seriously.
In an effort to just get an update posted for those of you who read my last post, I fear I have written this in a more hurried fashion than I would like. Forgive me if it sounds a little scatter-brained or unorganized. Ultimately, I have no idea what the content of my next post might be, but whatever it is: “Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and forevermore” (Psalm 113:2 KJV).
